The Hunt22″ $3900
Several years ago, my friend Mel, who is a mountain man historical re-enactor, modeled for one of my sculpture classes. We had a great time sculpting him in his buckskins with all his mountain man accoutrements. While we sculpted he would tell us stories about his experiences in good mountain man fashion. The idea for this sculpture came from one of his stories. He and a friend had been hunting in the Rocky Mountains of central Utah. If I remember correctly I think they were hunting elk. They had been out trekking in large circle most of the day. When they returned to where they had started, they found the tracks of a mountain lion who had apparently been tracking them. As he told the story, I could see in my mind’s eye Mel as an early 19th century mountain man out hunting in the forest. Hearing a noise behind him, he turns to see a mountain lion perched on the rocks above. Predator or prey?
