The name, Little Brother of War, comes from a translation of one of the Native American tribe’s name for lacrosse. It describes Lacrosse’s relationship with war. Lacrosse could be a very violent sport. In the game played by the Ojibwe (the tribe represented in this sculpture) it was legal to strike another player on the head if he held onto the ball to long.
